Come escape the city & avoid the crowds of Tahoe! Come and relax at the Chesa Madrisa, a Swiss inspired mountain home, built in 2001.
An ideal location just 3-4 hours from the Bay Area, nestled on the edge of Big Trees State Park, and approximately half way between Bear Valley Ski Resort & Murphys, an historical mining town in the Sierra Nevada foothills now well known for excellent wineries and its charming main street.
The Chesa Madrisa sets itself apart from nearby rentals - This home is light filled & well furnished, and features high quality amenities.
Relax by the double-sided fireplace and enjoy the view from a wall of windows nearly 8 feet in height. This home has all the perks of a hotel combined with a home - including wifi and a kitchen equipped with top of the line amenities such as a Keurig coffee maker, All-Clad crock pot, Weber propane grill, Kitchen-Aid standing mixer, and Vitamix blender.
As you walk across the covered foot-bridge from the garage into the home, be sure to ring the antique bell on your inaugural visit! The Chesa Madrisa is a two story home, with just over 3,100 square feet including 3 bedrooms, 3 full baths, and one half bath. Upstairs has an expansive floor plan with an elevated kitchen & dining area open to a living area with double sided fireplace, huge sectional couch, cozy entertainment area, and sitting area on opposite side of fireplace. Upstairs also includes a half bath and mud-room for tossing ski gear. Downstairs, guests will find 3 bedrooms, each with its own king size bed & full bath attached. The lower level also includes a kids play area, complete with game & toy closet, and a laundry area.
The Chesa Madrisa comfortably sleeps a maximum of 6 adults and 4 children (1 set of bunk beds & 2 additional twin size cots are available for children). We can not comfortably accommodate more than 6 adults - our goal is quality over quantity and we want all our guests to have a wonderful experience.
This home is child friendly and includes an amazing array of kid gear - TV area with entertainment and games, baby necessities such as a Baby Bjorn travel crib, diaper changing padded cushion, Fisher-Price strap on high chair or booster seat, Baby Einstein exersaucer, Baby Bjorn Babysitter, baby gate, Graco doorway jumping seat, Little Tikes Play Kitchen, and various toys for a variety of ages. All of the kid gear is organized & tucked away so guests traveling without children are comfortable as well.
If you are looking for an upscale, relaxing & clean home to enjoy for your vacation, the Chesa Madrisa is an excellent choice – this is our family vacation home & not a generic investment rental. The owner has deep California roots and custom built this home in 2001. Recently the home had an interior update with new carpeting, many new furnishings, and all new kitchen gadgets and cookware.

Big Trees is an ideal location – a quiet residential neighborhood off highway 4 between Bear Valley Ski Resort and Murphys, it also borders Big Trees State Park where guests can marvel at Giant Sequoias. Come and check out various local activities during your visit to the Chesa Madrisa:

Staying here was an amazing experience. The house is beautiful. We showed up on Thursday to about a foot of snow on the deck and roof. Walked inside to a warm and cozy house, that was very easy to make yourself very comfortable. That night is snowed all night long. We woke up to about 8" of snow on all of the cars. Great time! All the rooms were very spacious, and my dogs absolutely loved the place. First time in the snow for them and they were having a ball. Hilary is a very nice lady to deal with. I highly recommend this house to anyone, any age, with animals or not. Thank you for a great trip. We will return to stay at Chesa Madrisa!
We have rented locations for many years now and this is the first time that I have wanted to complete a review, though I am hesitant to do so only because I selfishly want to keep this my little secret paradise! The home was spacious, VERY tastefully decorated, fully supplied and accommodating. Hillary was gracious and we were welcomed with doggie treats and people treats in the form of a delicious bottle of wine from a local winery. She went out of her way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The kitchen was fully stocked with quality and working kitchen equipment, no need to go hunting for the one sharp knife in this place. I would recommend Chesa Madrisa any time of year!
We (two families) rented this house for the labor day weekend. The house is nicely situated right next to the Calaveras Big Trees State Park which is a must see. We also drove from the house to Murphy (vine tasting) and Angel Camp (swim in Lake New Melones) Other than the great location this house is also great to spend time and enjoy the company of each other in the house. The house is large and the fireplace in the family room allows everyone to be comfortable at the same time in the same place. We were also fortunate to have Hillary as the property manager. She was great. She always responded whithin a short period and even send a reply to our email quite late the day we arrived for a minor issue. The house is modern with all amenities you would expect from a house in this price range. I hight recommend this for a weekend escape or a longer stay in the area.
My wife and I enjoyed the Chesa Madrisa mountain home with our friends for a long weekend. Conveniently located a few miles from anything you could need yet secluded enough to really relax, unwind and reset away from the everyday grind. The home is much nicer than advertised, well appointed, clean and inviting indoor and out. We really enjoyed the outdoor spaces with porches all around. With a party of 6 we stayed very comfortable and never felt as if we were cramped for space. Three King rooms all with full baths eases the pain of deciding which couple gets the "Good room". They are equally elegant. I cant wait for our next visit
I recently stayed at the Chesa Madrisa with two other couples. It was the perfect location for a great weekend get away in the big pines!! The house is new, modern, clean and beautiful. We wanted for nothing. There were three King bed suites with private baths that made it perfect for 3 couples. Each room was elegantly arranged and extremely comfortable. The common areas were large enough for everyone to sit and visit, the deck was cool in the evening and inviting. The kitchen had everything you could imagine. Very nicely stocked. The owner communicated with me very quickly and effectively. Gave me advise when I asked and was available for suggestions. There was a bottle of wine on the counter when we arrived with a simple welcome card. Nice touch. There is a trending creep with owners to charge for linen, towels, toiletries and such items. This house has it all included and in find quality. My compliments to the owner/manager of this home and I ask that you maintain this standard. It adds to the whole experience. If you are planning a stay in the Big Trees, Murphy, or Columbia area, I'd give a hard look at the Madrisa! It is a very comfortable stay... Highly recommended.
