We are Christen and Tom Mizikar, owners of Beachwood Cottage in Ligonier, PA and Beachwood Punaluu on the Big Island of Hawaii. We love to explore the world and travel as often as we can. We welcome fellow adventurous travelers to visit two of our favorite places on the planet - the beautiful rolling hills and forests of historic Pennsylvania or the rugged and undeveloped Ka'u District on the Island of Hawaii...it's volcano country and the land of exotic black sand beaches.
Since first offering vacation rental accommodations six years ago in Pennsylvania, we have been privileged to have hosted hundreds of people from nearly a dozen countries around the world. We've been part of business leadership retreats, weddings, anniversaries, honeymoons and special times that will become cherished family memories for our guests.
It makes us both happy to know that for our visitors, their stay in Hawaii or Pennsylvania will be the subject of fond โremember that timeโฆโ conversations in years to come.
Weโve made new friends and enjoy seeing or hearing from repeat visitors each year. "Like" us on Facebook & keep up to date with both properties and the surrounding areas. It is our sincere hope that you, and your family, will become a part of the story of Beechwood Cottage in Pennsylvania or Beachwood Punalu'u in Hawaii.
Our Hawaiian condo is located in the rural and beautiful Ka'u District on the southeastern coast of the Big Island. Built in 1976, and as the only resort accommodations in the district, the complex is within walking distance of one of the world's most famous black sand beaches - Punaluu Beach Park - and a short drive from Volcanoes National Park - Hawaii Island's most visited destination.
Both places are special to us and we'll look forward to sharing them with you soon.
Why This Property?
Before buying our place in Hawaii, we took many trips to the Big Island, staying in Kailua-Kona and Hilo. After checking out other areas, we decided the Ka'u District is the best fit for us. On each of our many prior trips, we found that our adventurous vacation style took us all over the island - Hilo, Volcanoes, Hamakua Coast, Waimea, Hawi, South Point (Ka Lae) - and only this one of a kind (rea

Before buying our place in Hawaii, we took many trips to the Big Island, staying in Kailua-Kona and Hilo. After checking out other areas, we decided the Ka'u District is the best fit for us. On each of our many prior trips, we found that our adventurous vacation style took us all over the island - Hilo, Volcanoes, Hamakua Coast, Waimea, Hawi, South Point (Ka Lae) - and only this one of a kind (really - there literally are not any other condos in Ka'u) complex had the location and relaxed Hawaiian lifestyle that fit us best.
If you are looking for a riotous night-life...you will not find it here. In fact, you might be on the wrong island for the party experience; even Kailua-Kona rolls up the streets fairly early most nights (Try Oahu & Wakiki for big city bustle and hustle). We're not located in a city and the nearby towns are just as quiet at night . The pace of life here is slow, quiet and for us, perfect...perfect for relaxation, exploration and the personal recharge you are looking for. Take time to sit and watch the sea breeze blow the palm trees in the tradewinds and be awed by the millions of stars in the blackness of Ka'u's night sky. Kailua-Kona is an hour and thirty minute drive; Hilo is an hour away - that's each way. So, we suggest stocking up on groceries when you arrive in either airport.
None of the units at Sea Mountain have air conditioning - ours has three ceiling fans (two inside - living room and bedroom, one on the lanai) and generous ventilation with Hawaiian louvered windows to take advantage of the Hawaii's famous trade winds. We have found that often with the fan on at night, you may even need a blanket for comfort, so a blanket is provided, along with some extra pillows, should you want or need them.
Unique Benefits
As a boy, I was regaled with stories of Old Hawaii told my great Uncle and grandfather - both of whom lived in Hawaii in the early 1940s and later. As an adult, and finally visiting Oahu, I was surprised to not find the version of Hawaii as explained to me - and firmly planted in my mind's eye - by Uncle Joe and my grandfather.
Flash forward to 2008 and our first visit to Ka'u and Sea Mountain.

Flash forward to 2008 and our first visit to Ka'u and Sea Mountain. Like many visitors, we decided to rent here for a few days so we could be close to Volcanoes NP for exploration and repeat visits. We were so surprised to find the slice of real Hawaii that still exists. There is not a lot here - unless one counts peace, quiet, dark sky-filled nights, friendly people and their history as "things". Then, in that case, Ka'u is overflowing with Hawaii's real bounty.
There are few other places on the Big Island that offer so much of what you'll crave for a visit - an easy walk to a lifeguarded beach, ocean views from the lanai and a beautifully designed and cared for small condo complex.
