Our cabin is an authentic, hand-hewn hemlock cabin in the Blue Ridge Highlands of Virginia, near Meadows of Dan, Floyd, and less than two miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's privately situated on a unique property with other cabins scattered around; our particular cabin is in a private location with tall trees bordering two sides, and a hillside bordering another, to offer plenty of seclusion. Parking is immediately adjacent to the cabin, with no hills or stairs to climb other than two steps up to the front porch.
The cabin has wood floors, a private master bedroom, a loft with two beds and a futon, and a reading nook under the stairs. We have a full kitchen with dishes, pots, pans, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster, and a full-size bathroom with walk-in shower and a full size washer and dryer. The dining area has a solid walnut table and benches that seat six.
The living room has a a cozy gas fireplace that's easy to operate, a hand-made walnut futon and coffee table, rockers, 39" cable HDTV, free WiFi, and a Bluetooth stereo speaker. We have some DVDs available, plus lots of books and board and card games.
There's space for up to five to sleep here comfortably - a queen bed in the bedroom, with windows looking out at the trees; a queen and single bed in the loft; and a futon in the loft. All linens and towels are provided for your stay.
One of the best features is the large deck off the back of the cabin; it's quiet and comfortable, with outdoor seating and a charcoal grill. You can put on a playlist, sit and relax with a good book and a cup of coffee or glass of wine, and enjoy.
Guest Access
When you rent you'll have the entire space to yourself - full kitchen, bathroom, laundry facilities, large back deck and grill.
Interaction with Guests
We're always available to be contacted if needed, but you have your privacy as well. We have contact-less check-in.
The Neighborhood
You can walk or drive down the private road to the Cockram Mill Complex, grab lunch at the Longfin Grill (opened seasonally), and sit on their back deck overlooking the Dan River. On the grounds of the cabin itself, are acres of mowed fields and gravel roads to walk, run, bike, toss a ball and walk your dogs.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than two miles away from the cabin. Lovers Leap is on Jeb Stuart Highway, only a couple of miles away, and has some of the most picturesque views around. There are several antique shops, country stores, and farmers markets in the area. Mabry Mill is the most photographed landmark on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is just a few miles away. The mill still grinds flour more than a century since its original construction. Near Mabry Mill, you can also see the Matthews Cabin, blacksmith shop and interpretive area, as well as demonstrations on blacksmithing, carding, spinning, basket making and other traditional Appalachian crafts.
Chateau Morrisette and Villa Appalaccia are just a few miles away. They often have festivals, live entertainment, or other activities going on. You can also enjoy local and regional meaderies and cideries. Spend a few days at FloydFest - the cabin is one of the most convenient spots to stay if you're attending. Less than a half hour away, we recommend you visit the unique town of Floyd, VA. Some of the attractions there include restaurants, a coffee shop/loft, a pub/grill that has great food and live entertainment, Floyd Country Store where they have (during season) live Bluegrass music (lots of fun), other live music, arts, and crafts that are set up formally (and sometimes sporadically) throughout town.
There's tons of stuff to do outdoors, including hiking the trails at Rocky Knob/Rock Castle Gorge; Fairy Stone State Park; Fred Clifton Park; and Buffalo Mountain. The Rocky Knob recreation area covers more than 4000 acres, with four trails that offer a variety of scenic and historical wonders. The Rock Castle Gorge trail descends over three miles into the backcountry camping area in the bottom of the gorge. The strenuous and rugged nature of the trail reveal part of the reason this pathway was given National Recreational Trail status. There's also a great recreation area nearby with basketball and tennis courts, and Fred Clifton Park, a couple miles up the road, has awesome views of the northern Blue Ridge and diverse bird and butterfly watching.
It's an easy drive to Martinsville to catch a NASCAR race. Stuart is a beautiful drive less than 20 minutes from the cabin, while bigger box stores can be shopped in Galax, Christiansburg, and Martinsville.
Getting Around
The nearest major airports are Roanoke, VA, or Greensboro, NC, both about an hour and a half from the cabin. We're very close (1.5 miles) to the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are cool general stores, farmers markets, and antique shops in the area, and easy drives will get you to bigger stores for necessities.
